As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded and museums began to shut their doors at the beginning of 2020, the need for a digital transformation for cultural institution was brought to the fore.
As our first survey highlighted, despite the surge in digital activities that we witnessed, this crisis emphasized the structural weaknesses that have for a long time affected museums, in terms of resources and staff dedicated to digital activities and communication.
As an organisation always involved in the challenges that contemporary museums have to face, we chose this topic as the centre of the discussion for the second webinar of our Capacity Building Series, that will take place on the 21st of October, 14:00 Paris time (GTM+2).
This webinar will gather museum professionals from different countries to review:
- Digitisation of collections and new opportunities for the publics
- Museum education and lifelong learning online
- Developing crucial digital skills and trainings for heritage professionals
- Generating revenues through digital activities
The webinar will be will be streamed, with simultaneous translation in French, English and Spanish.

LOUISA NNENNA ONUOHA
Chief Museum Education Officer of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Nigeria, she is currently working at the National Museum Oyo. She has been in the service of the commission for over nineteen years, where she has been involved in creating, initiating and evaluating programmes in Nigeria’s largest museums in Lagos and Ibadan. Since 2001, she has addressed topical and contemporary issues through exhibitions and other museum educational programmes that are people centered and inclusive both at local and international levels. She holds an M.A in Creative Arts from the University of Lagos, a PG.D in Museum Studies from the Institute of Archaeology and Museum Studies, Jos , Nigeria
Catherine leads strategy for Libraries and Museums within Microsoft’s Education division. In this role her goal is to leverage technology to further the missions of Libraries and Museums globally in attracting visitors, optimizing the visitor experience, supporting research, serving the community, improving operations and exploring emerging opportunities for Libraries and Museums as their role is defined in a continually changing world. Catherine was most recently Chief Digital Officer at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. In that position, she led the digital transformation of the Museum for 7 years, as part of a 25 year career in technology across a variety of industries. Catherine has had a lifelong love and interest in technology and its ability to optimize outcomes across all aspects of life and society. Catherine is originally from Sydney, Australia, holding a B. Business (Accounting) from the University of Technology, Sydney and a M. Sc Business Analytics (Data Science) from Syracuse University.
Ramiro Martínez is the Executive Director at Museo Amparo in Puebla, México. Since 2010, he has led a new stage for the Museum, standing out its complete structural renovation, designed by the acknowledged Mexican architect Enrique Norten, which finished in April 2015. In terms of programs and acquisitions, he has focused on promoting research and new design schemes in the Permanent Collections, as well as coordinating an exhibition program which balances the presentation of Pre Columbian, Viceregal and Contemporary art. He has also worked on expanding the Mexican Contemporary Art Collection, reorganizing the Education department, and building alliances with academic institutions and the community.
Between 1997 and 2004 Marijke Smallegange (1969) started her marketing career at several FMCG’s and digital agency Lost Boys. Having worked at the Rijksmuseum from 2004 – 2008 she continued her career at ING as head of sponsoring, events and brand activation. Between 2011 and 2018 Smallegange has worked as an independent consultant and worked for a diverse range of national and international corporations including KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Talpa radio, Aegon and Heineken. In 2018 she returned to the Rijksmuseum to lead the department digital marketing, communication and commerce.
PIER LUIGI SACCO
Pier Luigi Sacco is the Head of the OECD Venice Office since February 2020. He was Special Advisor to the European Commissioner for Education, Youth and Culture and the Director of the Computational Human Behavior flagship project at the Bruno Kessler Foundation, Trento. He is Professor of Cultural Economics at IULM University Milan, Senior Researcher at metaLAB at Harvard, and visiting scholar at Harvard University
